Congratulations on surviving the Match process, and welcome to the LIJ family!

Your next few years will prepare you for a lifetime of serving patients, saving lives and challenging yourself to improve each day. Unfortunately, before you are able to appreciate that bonus, you will go through some times of hardship, struggle, and endurance. Your brain will dwell on those times often, but remember that there are times of victory, growth, and appreciation ahead.

The days are long, but the years are short. What now seems like an eternity away, is actually just around the corner. Realizing this as soon as possible increases your ability to get started on mastering the skills you’ll use for the rest of your life.

The remarks of entering interns are eerily similar, as are the remarks of departing seniors. Take heart that those who have blazed a path ahead of you marvel at their own growth and feel remarkably more prepared for their attending role than when in your shoes (albeit not fully prepared- that’s never coming). Also, they’ve managed to have some fun along the way.

Welcome, all. Not only to residency, but to a much larger community of Emergency Medicine!
