CRITICAL CARE

The Division of Critical Care within the Northwell Health Department of Emergency Medicine houses twelve core faculty who are dual trained in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. EM-Critical Care faculty currently serve as attending academic physicians in Northwell’s Surgical, (SICU) Neurosurgical, (NSICU), and Medical (MICU) Intensive Care Units. The Division of Critical Care serves as both a leader in innovation and research within the institution, and has ongoing research projects relating to the management of patients with critical illness and cardiac arrest in the emergency department. Northwell’s flagship hospital, North Shore University Hospital, serves as the institutions Level 1 Trauma Center and is the Emergency Medicine program’s primary training site. The emergency department at North Shore contains four resuscitation bays, each of which contains the equipment needed to care for critically ill and injured patients, and is run by Emergency Medicine residents under the supervision of both EM and dual trained faculty. The Critical Care Division at this site is heavily involved in both on-shift and didactic resident education, and serves to promote best practice management of the sickest patients seen in the ER.
