Telehealth Leadership Fellowship

 

Northwell Health is the largest health system in New York State and is poised to become one of the largest telemedicine providers in the United States.  Northwell Emergency Telehealth Services (NETS) has a one-year fellowship program designed for Emergency Medicine Physicians to become leaders in the emerging field of telemedicine.  Fellows will be exposed to the key components of a successful telehealth program including:

  • Administration
  • Quality & Patient Satisfaction
  • Innovation
  • Clinical Excellence
  • Education
  • Research

The fellowship is an academic offering within the Division of Prehospital & Disaster Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Zucker/Hofstra School of Medicine.

 

Administration

Fellows will participate in weekly administrative meetings as well as subcommittee meetings (operations, etc.). Fellows will learn about the following:

  • Telehealth billing / coding and revenue cycle
  • Telehealth credentialing and onboarding
  • Telehealth charting, billing and documentation
  • Basic budgeting, scheduling and management

 

Quality & Patient Satisfaction

Fellows will participate in NETS staff meetings and be expected to develop one Quality project over the course of their fellowship. They will also participate in a monthly quality/process improvement committee.

 

Innovation

Fellows will be expected to complete one Innovation project during their fellowship. Innovation projects may include any of the following:

  • Development of new programs within health system resources (lab, imaging, EMS, etc.)
  • Improvement of existing processes by developing automations / Application Programming Interface integrations
  • Development of dashboards or visualizations
  • Improvement of the Emergency Telehealth discharge and follow-up process

 

Clinical Excellence

As a strong background in Emergency Medicine is the foundation of effective Emergency Telehealth, fellows will provide 20 hours of clinical coverage a week where they will function as an attending physician.  Under the supervision of a faculty member, fellows will work two 12-hour telehealth shifts a week.

 

Education

Fellows will have the opportunity to complete advanced online telehealth training.  They will also be expected to present didactic presentations to the three emergency medicine residency programs at Northwell/Hofstra.

Additionally, Fellows may spend time observing other telemedicine specialties within Northwell including, but not limited to

  • eICU
  • TelePsych
  • TeleStroke
  • TeleTox
  • House Calls, Transitions of Care Management and Skilled Nursing Facilities
  • EMS
  • Simulation Training
  • Disaster Preparedness
  • Obesity medicine

 

The option of completing a degree program (i.e.  M.B.A., M.P.H.) is available upon request.

 

Research

Fellows will be an integral part of the Emergency Telehealth research group, and publications are anticipated.  Fellows will also lead periodic journal club meetings for the Emergency Telehealth faculty.
