Match Day – It’s almost here!
This Friday at 1pm thousands of senior medical students will find out where they matched for residency. Today, during the most accurate Pi Day of this century, these same students found out whether or not they had matched (but not where) and whether they’ll have to step into the SOAP. Residency programs discovered if they had any unfilled spots.
If you’re wondering exactly how the Match algorithm works, check out this explanation from the NRMP.
Some good news (from 2015 data):
- Last year 93.9% of US Allopathic seniors matched
- 94.8% of couples in the Couples Match matched successfully
- 78% of seniors got into one of their top 3 choices
- 99.4% of spots were filled
- EM was the 3rd most popular residency among US seniors, after IM and Pediatrics.
Some not so good news:
- US residency programs are seeing a steady increase in the number of applicants without significant growth in the number of residency positions available.
- In 2015 there were 2,352 EM applicants and only 1,813 matches (99.6% fill rate)
- In 2015 for EM/IM there were 84 applicants and 27 matches (96% fill rate)
Enough numbers? Good. If you still crave data, all of the above and more can be found at the NRMP Match Data Website. For many students this is one of the most stressful weeks of medical school. It is also an especially rewarding time as 4 years of medical school (more for some, such as MD/PhD’s) come to an end. If you’re feeling a little too stressed just try to engage in whatever stress relieving activities you enjoy and/or talk to your friends, family, and teachers. You’re not alone! There are only a few more days to go…
Good luck during this last week of the Match process – we can’t wait to discover who’ll be starting with us this July!
